Understanding the pre-Dobbs abortion landscape in Indiana
Between June 2021 and June 2022, the Hoosier Abortion Access Study surveyed nearly 500 Hoosiers on their experiences trying to access abortion care, and the impact on their lives and families. The study also included interviews with 40 abortion seekers as well as ~20 doctors and abortion clinic staff. Researchers at Indiana University and Ibis Reproductive Health conducted the study in collaboration with All-Options Pregnancy Resource Center, the Chicago Abortion Fund, and Kentucky Health Justice Network.
Study findings reveal that pre-Dobbs, abortion was difficult to access in Indiana. Many people could not get care, and for those who did, the cost impacted their ability to make ends meet — from making rent payments to paying for groceries. Now that Indiana has a new abortion ban in place, many Hoosiers will be forced to carry their pregnancies to term, leave the state for care, or self-manage their abortions.
