About the Study
Overview
The Hoosier Abortion Access study is a prospective, mixed-methods study that measured knowledge of and attitudes toward abortion among Hoosiers, as well as Hoosiers’ experiences trying to access abortion care. The study was conducted by researchers at Indiana University and Ibis Reproductive Health, in collaboration with local reproductive health access organizations.
Who?
Nearly 500 people from across the state participated in the study. To be eligible, participants had to live in Indiana, speak English or Spanish, and had to be pregnant and seeking abortion care. Researchers conducted surveys and interviews with Hoosiers seeking abortions, and also interviewed clinicians and abortion clinic staff who provide that care.
Why?
Pre-Dobbs, Indiana was one of the most restrictive abortion policy contexts in the country. Yet, little was known about the experiences of Hoosiers seeking abortion care and how these restrictions impacted their lives. Now that Indiana policymakers have passed an abortion ban, findings from the Hoosier Abortion Access Study provide data to inform conversations about the future of abortion access for Hoosiers.
